Bedbugs
Appearance:
Adult bedbugs are flat, oval shaped bugs with a reddish brown banded appearance. Adults grow to 4 to 5 mm in length (about the size of an apple seed). Newly hatched nymphs are translucent, lighter in color and continue to molt and become browner as they reach maturity. Bedbugs may appear bright red after feeding.
Behavior:
*Bedbugs are nocturnal and are most active just before dawn. They are attracted by the warmth of a human body and the carbon dioxide that we exhale as we breathe. When a bedbug bites, it pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place. The bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours later, as a dermatological reaction to the injected agents. Bites are often found in rows or clusters on various places on the body. Bed bugs typically feed every five to ten days, although bedbugs can survive for as long as 18 months without feeding. Bedbugs can consume more than three times their own body weight in your blood. If a major infestation exists, you can be bitten several hundred times by bed bugs in a single night.
Signs of Infestation:
*Bedbugs often hide along the seams of mattresses, leaving eggs and dark spots. You may also see small blood stains on sheets. Bedbugs spread rapidly and can be found in many locations besides the mattress. They can hide in small cracks and crevices, on the bed frame, in the box springs, behind baseboards, in electrical outlets, carpeting, and more.

Roaches
Appearance:
*The German Roach is a small species of cockroach, measuring about ½ inch long. These roaches can be tan through brown to almost black, and have two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Although German Roaches have wings, they are unable to sustain flight.
*American Roach adults are between 1 and 1/2 inches long, making the American Roach the largest cockroach in the United States. They typically appear reddish-brown in color.
*The Oriental Roach is a large species of cockroach, measuring about 1 inch in length. These roaches are dark brown to black in color and have a glossy body.
Behavior:
*Cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers. They particularly like starch, sugary foods, grease and meats. They will eat anything they can get a hold of.
Signs of Infestation:
*They can be found in damp, warm areas and do not like cold temperatures.
How to Control:
*As with any roach problem, it is important to treat the nests. This may include several treatments from a professional as well as caulking, wall repair, and a good cleaning of the infected areas.
Boxelder Bugs
Appearance:
Adults are 1/2 inch long and primarily black with fine red lines. Juveniles are bright red and develop black marks and wings as they grow.
Damage
The bugs don’t cause any harm to humans or pets, and rarley cause significant damage to landscapes, but they can be a nuisance. Additionally, their droppings can leave marks on cloth materials such as furniture, curtains or clothing.
How to Control
There are several strategies for managing an infestion:
- Cut-down boxelder trees. Removing boxelder trees, especially female (pod-bearing) trees, can be effective in eliminating an infestation since the trees serve as a primary source of food. Since the bugs can fly from trees up to several blocks away, the bugs may not be completely eliminated. If removal of the trees is not possible, clean-up the seeds that fall from the tree.
- Repair any entry points into your home such as damaged window screens, door thresholds, or vents. Use caulk for sealing or use expandable spray foam to seal larger entry points.
- Insecticide treament can be effective for heay infestations. A regular exterior barrier can help to prevent them from entering your home throughout the year.
- On the interior, boxelder bugs can be removed with a vacuum or broom. A pesticide treatment at entry points can also be helpful.
Earwigs
Appearance:
Earwigs can be easily identified by the pincers at the end of their abdomen. They average about 5/8 inch in length and have a dark reddish-brown color with light brown legs.
Damage
Earwigs can cause damage by eating plants and can be a nuisance indoors. They can gain access to your home through doors, windows and the foundation.
How to Control
Earwigs thrive in moisture. It is important to eliminate high moisture areas around crawlspaces, basements, sinks, and foundations. Repair leaks, direct rain gutters and sprinklers away from the foundation. Repair any damaged screens, vents, door thresholds, etc. Use caulk, foam and weather stripping to seal around doors, windows, pipes and other entry points. Create a pesticide barrier on the exterior of the home on a regular basis.
