Plan for Spring
I know that it may still feel like winter is never going to end here in the Salt Lake City valley, but the truth is that spring time is just around the corner. Now don’t go wearing your shorts just yet. There is still plenty of snow on the ground. You may, however, want to start thinking about how to best prepare for spring this year. Here are a few tips to prepare your yard and house for success, and keep in mind that if you want more info about pest control and lawn fertilization visit us at Tytopest.com:
- Clear away debris – Leaves and other debris that you weren’t able to get cleaned up before the first snow surprised you should be removed from the ground. This will allow water to get to the grass and/or plants you have planted in the beds.
- Pre-emergent is your friend – Spring time is a time of huge growth in the plant world. This includes weeds. Pre-emergent will keep those weed seeds from ever germinating. Many types of weed start to germinate soon after the spring thaw, so the sooner you get the pre-emergent down the better. Avoid any areas that you plan to plant seeds. It will continue to inhibit seed growth for months.
- Mulch your beds – To avoid weeds in the flower beds mulch is a great solution. Mulch will still allow you plant seeds where you want, but will create a decent barrier for weed seeds. As mulch is watered a harder layer forms on the surface. This layer will greatly reduce the number of weeds you will have to pick throughout the rest of the year.
- Seal your house – Winter is hard on houses. Many of the areas that you spent time sealing in the fall to keep the cold out may have deteriorated. Do a quick check around the doors and windows to see if there openings that bugs will try to get through. Yes, that’s right; bugs will try to enter your home as they wake up this spring. Do your best to seal off entry points and then let us create a barrier they can’t cross with a thorough pest control treatment.
